Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year
08/09/2023
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! This morning I, along with members of my Cabinet, our Executive Directors of Schools, and Board of Education directors, had the absolute pleasure of visiting every school that was celebrating their first day of the new school year. It is so much fun to welcome our staff and students back. Nothing beats that first day of school energy and excitement. Of course, we still have a few schools to welcome back in the coming days and weeks but we can officially say that the 2023-2024 school year is off to a great start!

Safety and Security in DCSD Schools
03/23/2023
As I am sure you know, there was a shooting at East High School in Denver this morning. Our hearts go out to the impacted staff and students and the entire East High School community. As a mom and a leader of schools, I know how events like today can shake us all and raise questions about how we are keeping our students safe.

Happy New Year! We are so excited to have our students and staff back in the classrooms after the break. This afternoon I had the absolute privilege of visiting Sage Canyon Elementary and Rock Ridge Elementary in Castle Rock and reading to students. It does not get any better than seeing the eager faces of Kindergarteners as you share with them the wonder of reading.

Yesterday's Tragedy in Colorado Springs
11/21/2022
As we head into the Thanksgiving week, it’s a time to gather with loved ones, show love and gratitude for our families and friends, and reflect on our blessings. Sadly, many in the Colorado Springs community had that taken away just days before the holiday. Our hearts are absolutely breaking for those impacted by the senseless tragedy that took place at Club Q last night. This type of violence is difficult to fathom. We do applaud the heroes that took down the gunman, but ultimately 5 people still lost their lives with many others injured. Please join us in sending our thoughts and prayers to the victims, those who lost or nearly lost a loved one, and all who were impacted by this tragedy, as their lives and Thanksgiving holiday will never be the same.

Update on 5A and 5B
11/09/2022
I want to sincerely thank our amazing community for joining together over the past few months in support of ballot initiatives 5A: Mill Levy Override and 5B: Bond. We came so close! As of this morning, 5A received over 49% support and 5B received almost 47%. While there are still votes to be counted, it is unlikely that the results will change. However, I believe that we should be celebrating the amazing gains in support we have made in such a short time!

How DCSD Determines Snow Days and Delays
11/04/2022
I hope you are staying warm on this chilly evening. I wanted to take a moment to let you know that our amazing Snow Team is closely monitoring the incoming winter storm. With this being one of the first storms of the season, I thought it would be a good time to quickly provide a little more information about how we determine when a delay or closure (snow day) is needed versus when we decide to keep schools open as normal.

I hope the school year is going well for your family. This fall weather is just gorgeous! I have loved being out in our schools and seeing the great learning going on. Our teachers and leaders are doing an amazing job of focusing on the achievement and growth of every one of our students and that focus is evident in every classroom I have had the pleasure of visiting. It has also been a joy to see so much positive parental involvement in our schools - thank you for all that you are doing to support our teachers and our kids.

Yesterday's Tragedy in Uvalde, Texas
05/25/2022
This is the last week of the 2021-2022 school year. While the last days of school are always filled with mixed emotions ranging from joy and relief, to sadness as our children say goodbye to their teachers and friends, today is feeling more mixed than ever. Many of us lost sleep thinking about the community of Uvalde, Texas, and the senseless tragedy that took place there yesterday. Our hearts are absolutely breaking for those impacted. This type of violence is difficult to fathom. And I know it raises questions for our families and staff about school safety right here in DCSD.

It’s already been over three weeks since I started the role of Superintendent of this wonderful school district. In that time, I’ve been able to meet one-on-one with all of our department directors and over half of our school leaders. Last week I began school visits. It truly fills my bucket to be in classrooms, seeing the amazing work that our teachers do and how immersed our students are in learning.
