Following a competitive audition process, two of Castle View High School’s choirs were selected to perform recently at the Colorado Music Educators Association conference at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Annually, the conference is attended by hundreds of music and voice teachers from across Colorado.

“At Castle View, we celebrate our musicians and artists with the same fervor we would any championship team, as these students serve to engage, to inspire, and to nurture the heart and soul of our building,” said Castle View Principal Rex Corr.

Castle View embraces an academy model at its school, in which students select the track that most interests them and then engage in smaller learning communities where they can develop significant relationships with teachers assigned to that academy. The school’s visual and performing arts academy has made way for a robust arts learning that enables students to develop their skills and talents with rigor.

“We are so very lucky to have an administration who supports us and allows us to explore and create,” said Rochelle Walter, who directs several of Castle View’s choirs, as does her husband, Heath Walter. “Above everything else, we have incredible students that are willing to take risks, students that show compassion toward one another, students that have a desire for excellence-- and fun-- and know what it means to work hard and keep working hard, as well as students who allow themselves to be vulnerable and share their passion and spirit for music and for life. We treasure the connections and relationships and are so fortunate that they share that with us every day. We feel that is why we were fortunate enough to have two groups selected to perform at the State Conference.”

Students from all DCSD high schools also performed in the All State Choir during the conference.
