ENGLEWOOD -

On February 26, the DCSD English Language Development team was awarded with the prestigious ELPA Excellence Award from the Colorado Department of Education. The award is given to school districts based on the growth and achievement of their English learners. DCSD was one four districts whose English learners ranked in the top 25 percentile of three categories:

  1. Growth on ACCESS test

  2. Growth on CMAS test

  3. Students performing proficient or advanced who transitioned out of the EL program

Remy Rummel receives awardAlong with the award comes a $130,000 grant for the department. ELD Coordinator Remy Rummel says the money will be used for “further diving into family engagement practices, and supporting our parents in becoming truly engaged and involved and empowered in our schools.” Some of the money will also go toward professional development for EL staff.

This recognition marks a tremendous turnaround for the program, which was out of compliance with the Colorado Department of Education when Rummel was hired nearly six years ago. Under the direction of Director of Educational Programming Natasha Straayer, the team set a goal to go from compliance to commitment.

“We have highly compliant programming in place. We have staffing that matches student need,” said Rummel. “We are committed to growing students from where they are to where they can go and to reach their full potential.”
