Short breaks for students to take during at-home learning
Regular brain breaks during work time are an important part of the school day. Sitting for long periods of time without moving is not good for anyone - especially for students learning to adjust to a remote-school model. Brain breaks can be short or long and can be as simple as a breathing or stretching break, a walk or perhaps some quick jumping jacks. DCSD Healthy Schools will be adding brain break ideas, videos, games and links for you to use for your remote learner. Please check back frequently as we hope to provide at least three new ideas per week.

Tips:
Set a timer or schedule your breaks into the school day
Mix it up! Use a variety of breaks to keep things fresh!
Younger students may need breaks every 10-15 minutes; older students can work for longer periods before pausing
After a moderate-to-vigorous physical activity break, ask your student to balance on one foot and breathe deeply for 20 - 30 seconds before returning to work
For meditations and breathing breaks, "half-mast" the computers or move to a comfy spot and simply listen
Write favorite brain breaks on popsicle sticks and have your child choose a stick when it's time for a break
