Top female student athletes in Douglas County honored for National Girls and Women in Sports Day
The top two-percent of female athletes in Douglas County School District (DCSD) were honored at the annual Girls and Women in Sports Luncheon last week at Chaparral High School. This year represented the 30th national celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day, created to encourage and promote the participation of girls in athletics. The girls who were honored were selected by their school’s coaches, athletic directors and principals for their outstanding achievements.
“The work you’ve done and the perseverance you have shown have made a tremendous difference and will continue to make a difference throughout your lives,” said 9News Sports Reporter, Taylor Temby, as she addressed the nearly 100 female student athletes in attendance. Temby, who served as emcee of the ceremony and is a graduate of Rock Canyon High School, additionally gave a shout out to her former coach Chris Page, who was in attendance as Highlands Ranch High School's principal.
Family members and others in the audience, who completely filled Chaparral’s auditorium, were audibly overwhelmed with the extraordinary achievements of each student as they were read aloud.
One such student, Oceane Mauffrey from ThunderRidge High School, is a two-year varsity letter winner in field hockey and first year letter winner in Cross Country. She is a multi-sport athlete having participated in field hockey, cross country, swimming and tennis. She is an academic first team all-state selection in cross country and received the coaches award for field hockey her junior year. She has a 5.0 GPA and is currently ranked first academically in her class, serves as French National Honors Society President and is the Founder and President of Give Girls a Chance, a nonprofit that helps woman stay safe and be successful in education.
Katherine Compton, who attends SkyView High School and competes for Ponderosa High School, is a three-year letter winner in gymnastics and a two-year letter winner in track. She was the 5A State Champion in Floor Exercise, scoring an impressive 9.85 in the finals. She holds the Ponderosa school record in every event except for Beam. She is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers with Colorado Young Leaders and maintains a 4.0 GPA.
Rock Canyon student Carmen Martinez has been a member of the Poms team for the past four years. She is team captain, All-American, and most recently was named to the 2017 All-Colorado team. Her coach says “she is a coach's dream; coachable, mature, selfless, accountable.” She is also an accomplished violinist, serving as concertmaster for Rock Canyon’s orchestra.
The ceremony was filled with words of wisdom for the future female leaders.
“I know that right now, the future CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods is sitting in this audience; I know that there’s somebody in this audience already thinking about how to cure childhood cancer; because you are now participating and gaining the tools you need to make a difference tomorrow,” said CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green. Green is the first woman in Colorado and the first African American woman in the history of high school athletics and activities to run an association.
“Every once in a while I’ll be doing my job or something else and I’ll hear a voice from my high school days that tells me about perseverance, being fair, being equitable, and being a team player, and I can always trace that back to my time being an athlete in high school,” she added.
Adult coaches Lou Krauss (Highlands Ranch High School), Becky Mudd (Rock Canyon High School) and Zerph Willis (Mountain Ridge Middle School) were also honored at the event, as well as Douglas County High School alumna Katherine Drake.
