We’re excited to announce that Castle View High School will produce Frozen, The Musical in November 2023! Talk about magical! Through a unique nationwide competition, one high school in every U.S. state and territory were granted the rights to produce Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical in their local communities. The winning productions will mark the first-ever school productions of Frozen anywhere in the world. Congratulations Sabercats!
CVHS’s submission included documentation and photos from performances that CVHS staff and students produced, including Chicago, Mamma Mia, and Les Miserables. CVHS’s theatrical resume boasts several coveted Bobby G Awards from the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Bobby G Awards are the Tony Awards for high school students. Applicants were asked to describe how they will use the theme, “Love Is an Open Door” as an opportunity to strengthen their school community, provide outreach to underserved groups, and support inclusive and diverse theater programs. CVHS’s application included how theater students learn important skills on and off stage that permeate throughout rehearsals and the final production. Those skills include communication, respect, collaboration, listening to people’s differences, and learning to work together.
CVHS theater teacher Rochelle Walter said these life skills are so important and support the theme. “Theater is like a big family,” she said. “You belong. You’re seen, heard, and validated.”
Those interested in auditioning for Frozen, The Musical can attend workshops next spring. The workshops will cover learning vocal excerpts from the show, a short dance combination, tips for a successful audition, and learning how to research a character and talk to an accompanist. Incoming freshmen are welcome to audition, and elementary and middle school students will be invited to audition for young Elsa and Anna. Tryouts will take place in late May or early August 2023. A cast and crew of nearly 150 students will perform Frozen, The Musical, including roughly 20 musicians, for the live orchestra.
The CVHS musical team is currently immersed in producing the school’s musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which closes on November 12. Until then, it’s all about a coat of many colors.
