LHS Graduate Makes a Living by His Hobby

Thanks to his teachers’ encouragement, Jacob Regan’s passion for playing video games evolved into a talent for creating digital art.

What is your name, which school did you attend, and what year did you graduate?
My name is Jacob Regan, and I graduated from Legend High School in 2013.

What have you been doing since graduation?
I went to the University of Colorado Denver and earned my bachelor’s of fine arts with an emphasis in 3D animation. After I graduated, I did odd jobs creating digital content. I also worked with the NFL to help create a visual experience played on a planetarium-style dome for Super Bowl 52. I now work for PlayStation as a character artist in San Diego, where I help sculpt the characters that go into PlayStation Studios' games. My passion for video games turned into a dream career

As someone who’s had a passion for video games all my life, it’s a dream come true that I get to work for the company that brought me so many great gaming memories. Being able to contribute to some of my favorite game titles feels surreal.

Share a positive memory from high school that sticks out to you.
I remember the Mr. Titan competition and how it was an absolute blast to compete in. I auditioned with a bunch of my friends, and we all got in. My friends and I put a lot of work into our performances, spending lots of time practicing our silly dance routines, and finding the right tux to wear was so much fun. I got sick right before the competition, and I remember I felt like I was on death's door. Despite that, I showed up and gave it my all! It ranks as one of the most fun nights I have had in my life!

What was one unique thing you learned about yourself during high school? How did your teachers and school support you?
I learned I had a love for digital art, and it’s all thanks to my teachers, who supported me. I took several computer classes in high school, mainly because I wanted as many classes with Mrs. Tawzer and Mrs. Barr. It was through their guidance that I discovered what kind of art I could create with a computer and that I could make a career out of it. They both pushed me to stick with digital 3D, and I am forever grateful to them for that.

What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?
"Listen to your mother more; she knows what she is talking about."

What skill (professional or personal) are you trying to master?
Lately, I have been trying to perfect my cooking. I never cooked much in college, but now I’ve found the art in creating a fantastic meal! It will probably take me a lifetime to master, but it is the discovery of new things and flavors that I love so much.

What are your future plans?
I plan to stay in the video game industry for the foreseeable future. I have so much more to learn and to master, which is part of the fun. I eventually want to teach and share all of the knowledge I have gained so far to inspire a new generation of digital artists.
