CU South Innovation Campus

Innovation Center at CU South and Alternative Education School in Parker

Background

DCSD purchased two facilities to serve as an Innovation Center (Career and Technical Education, Concurrent Enrollment programming) in Lone Tree and a new Alternative Education School in Parker.

How is DCSD funding these facilities?
Funding for the new Innovation Center and Alternative Education School comes from the 2018 bond premium and interest, as well as cash-in-lieu funding.

What changed from the original Pine Drive plans?
DCSD previously planned to construct the Innovation Center and Alternative Education School as a new campus on Pine Drive in Parker. On October 26, 2021, the Board of Education approved placing the project on Pine Drive on hold due to budget overruns. Staff committed to providing other facility and location alternatives to present to the Board by the end of the calendar year. On November 17, 2021, DCSD staff requested Board approval to potentially acquire the University of Colorado (CU) South facility in Lone Tree.

Why consider CU South?
The CU South building offers considerable financial savings for lease and rental revenue opportunities, is in a more desirable location within the district, has more square footage than the original Pine Drive proposal, and offers more opportunities for student programming and community partnerships.

What about the planned Alternative Education School?
Housing the Innovation Center at the CU South building would not compromise or change DCSD’s plans to open a new Alternative Education School in Parker, as outlined in the 2018 bond. The school remains scheduled to open in 2023 and DCSD staff is exploring other facility options.
