Alex Kaneshiro and Daniel Smith prove that individuals with disabilities can persevere through challenges and develop the necessary skills for gainful employment. Alex and Daniel are proud graduates of DCSD’s Bridge Transition Program. Bridge Program staff help young adults, ages 18-21, transition from school to the adult world through meaningful learning opportunities within the classroom and community. The program provides services to support students and families in gaining knowledge and access to support post-secondary outcomes.
Alex and Daniel are now working as Transportation Educational Assistants (TEA) in DCSD’s Transportation Department. Alex works at the North Transportation Terminal in Highlands Ranch. He makes positive connections with students, and monitors and assists those with disabilities who ride the bus to and from school. He also helps secure wheelchairs and other equipment on the bus. Alex is also a member of the snow team and helps keep the grounds safe by shoveling and applying ice melt to sidewalks.
“Alex is a very hard worker and we’re glad to have him as part of our team,” said Assistant Manager of Transportation Allison Harper.
Alex will soon celebrate his ninth anniversary with DCSD.
Daniel works at the East Transportation Terminal in Parker and drives the district’s Suburbans to other terminals to assist with route coverage. He also covers the Parker Terminal as needed. Daniel pre-trips the vehicles, makes sure they are fueled and cleaned, and shows up on time to wherever he is needed. Daniel earned his certification in white fleet training. He uses the suburban to drive to other terminals and to follow buses as they are taken to repair shops.
“He always comes to work with a smile and a very positive attitude,” said Supervisor Wil Ulrickson. “He’s eager to do whatever it takes to get the job done and is willing to go the extra mile!”
In fact, Wil nominated Daniel for a DCSD Employee RockStar Award last April for his outstanding work ethic.
Daniel is an ambassador for DCSD’s Bridge Program and advocates for Bridge students to consider employment with the district. Over the summer, Daniel worked as an Educational Assistant at Gold Rush Elementary’s BASE Program, which provides before and after school care, along with care during the summer and school breaks. Daniel is in his sixth year with DCSD.
One of the primary goals of the Bridge Transition Program is for students to gain independence and transition to meaningful employment.
“We’re thrilled that Alex and Daniel have found jobs in our district,” said Bridge Transition Program Principal Judy Jordan.
