Who or what inspired you to enter the field of education?
There are a lot of educators in my extended family, but I credit my mom as one of my role models. She was a special education preschool teacher for most of her teaching career.
I always knew I would do something in education, even as a young child, and that was confirmed the more I learned about teaching and had opportunities to be in classrooms with children.
Did you follow a traditional or unconventional path to become a principal?
I don't know if there is a true traditional pathway to become a principal. My journey started as a classroom teacher and over time I developed a passion for professional development and working with students in an administrative level. Over the last 10+ years, I have been in a leadership role at Acres Green Elementary, most recently as the Assistant Principal for three years. I am excited to continue and expand the great work of our school!
If you could write a book about your career path, what would you title it and why?
Everything You Need to Know, You Didn't Learn in College - This is really more of an inside joke because there are so many things about working in a school that are not college classes! I'm a reflective learner and always try to take away a lesson from every day!
What is a work-related accomplishment that you are the most proud of?
I am particularly proud of Acres Green Elementary for not only becoming a Leader in Me school but also achieving and maintaining Lighthouse status for the last 12 years. The journey to find the leader within every child is a passion of mine, but also what permeates everything we do at Acres Green Elementary!
How do you relax and regroup after a stressful day?
I love to spend time with my daughter. She is in 8th grade and plays a lot of volleyball! We love to hang out on the couch and watch movies, play board games, and go for hikes.
What do you like most about working in public education?
Public education is an amazing system, built to support the needs of all learners. I enjoy working with the students and families of our community.
What is your favorite way to show staff appreciation?
Food! Every time I ask my staff what they would like, they always say "Food!"
What is your favorite way to energize yourself at work?
When I need inspiration or motivation, I always go to the classrooms! I like sitting with the kids and hearing about the great things they are learning!
What do you like to do outside of work?
In addition to being a movie buff, I enjoy crocheting and reading. I usually have at least one crocheting project going while reading at least two books.
