The Office of Sustainability provides professional development, tools, grants and curriculum ideas to enhance environmental sustainability within your classroom.

Sustainability Library

DCSD Sustainability has created a library filled with engaging tools that you can check out through the Innovation and Design Center. To enhance sustainability in the classroom, new items are added to the library every year. Learn how to find a sustainability kit and how to check it out from DLMC.

Items include:

  • Weather Stations - Weather stations are great tools to enhance the study of the Earth's atmosphere
  • Microscopes - Get a closer look into plant cells or compost microorganisms with high powered microscopes
  • Aero Gardens - Aero Gardens contain fast growing plants that teaches students about Physical, Earth and Life Science
  • Watching Binoculars - Great for outdoor learning bird and butterfly watching.
  • Kill-a-wat readers - Students learn about kWh measurements and conserving energy.
  • Light meters - Measure the lighting throughout your school - great for performing lighting audits.
  • Scales - Is your recycling making an impact? Measure the weight and keep track of the data.
  • CO2 Air Quality Readers - Engaging CO2 readers are great to learn about what is in the air we breathe.
  • Vermicompost (worm factory) - Worms as a classroom pet? Fun and Educational...yes please!
  • Renewable Energy Kits - hands-on kits get students engaged while understanding renewable energy.
  • Mineral Kit - Not just any mineral kit, this kit educates students about minerals that are found in everyday items we use.
  • Soil Testers - Great tool for checking PH and moisture.
  • Books - Teacher's guide to fast-growing plants and other sustainability-related books.
  • Energy Conservation Kit - Sets of 3: kWh readers, Infrared Thermometer, and Light Meters.

Lessons and Resources

How does Sustainability “anchors” or “initiatives” align to your grade level science Colorado Academic Standards? Vertical alignment using an anchor generates authentic interest and deeper understanding of concepts. Outside Agencies

Complaints regarding violations of Title VI, (race, national origin), Title IX (sex, gender), Section 504/ADA (handicap or disability), may be filed directly with the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 North Speer Blvd., Suite 310, Denver, CO 80204. Complaints regarding violations of Title VII (employment) and the ADEA (prohibiting age discrimination in employment) may be filed directly with the Federal Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 303 E. 17th Ave., Suite 510, Denver, CO 80202, or the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 1560 Broadway, Suite 1050, Denver, CO 80202.

NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records at this link ( Douglas County School District Transcripts and Records Requests ).
