During Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce’s Tours for Teachers program, Chamber President/CEO Stacy Garmon asked Deb Tawzer, a technology teacher at Legend High School (LHS), and Kent Allison, an engineering teacher at Mountain Vista High School (MVHS), if they would be interested in having their students design the Castle Rock Chamber’s Business of the Month award.
Both teachers enthusiastically agreed, knowing that their students could more than deliver and would benefit from this real-world application in their Additive Manufacturing classes.
The Chamber requested that the award be 3D printed. Tawzer ran a design contest in her class and sophomore Max Roberts won. Max designed the 3D-printed Chamber’s Business of the Month Award for January. Max is a Career and Technical Education student and a volleyball athlete.
“The overall design of the trophy is based on the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce logo. I started by tracing the logo into solid works and extruding it into a 3D object. Then I added separate layers to add depth to the design and added a nice base. The next step was to choose which colors and types of filament to use when printing it,” said Max. “We started with a wood filament, which was much too fragile, leading to the change from a wood filament to plastic. After the designs were printed, the final step was to engrave the logo of the company being awarded the trophy, and with that, the trophy was completed!”
Through an agreement with the Chamber, LHS students will create the Business of the Month awards for January through June this year, with MVHS students creating the awards from July through December.
”A long-standing Chamber member is recognized each month, and we are excited to collaborate with the Douglas County School District on this monthly award,” said Garmon.
